What is a Boom Lift?
A boom lift is a specialized piece of aerial construction equipment used to transport materials or lift people in a tight space. Historically the boom of a sailboat was an arm that extended. Ahoy! In the same way, a boom lift can lift and extend. There are both articulating and rotating boom lifts.
When deciding what kind of boom lift is the best fit for you, you need to consider the reach, weight of materials, and environment that you are working in. Boom lifts are used for indoor and outdoor construction and maintenance projects.
Greater Accessibility and Reach
Unlike scissor lifts a boom lift has a telescoping and rotating arm. This gives you greater access to an area, especially working in more difficult terrain. The equipment doesn't need to be directly under the area that you need to work on.
The JLG E400 AJP Electric Boom Lift gives you a far greater reach. An aerial platform is attached to an arm that can extend and move up and down.
- Accessibility – up and over access, optional jib
- Manoeuvrability – move over uneven surfaces with Automatic Traction Control
- Productivity – work longer with longer duty cycles
- Environmentally friendly – zero emissions
Safety & Certification
While it is rare, a boom lift can tip over. It is important to understand exactly how a boom lift can be operated. For example, it should not be operated on a slope. It is designed to work on a level surface, with a minimum slope. A digital inclinometer can be used to measure the exact degree of a slope.
- Boom operators need to be certified
- Maximum slope ratings can change due to ground conditions and weather. For example, mud or loose gravel can reduce traction
- High wind speeds can affect the stability
- Make sure that the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure
- Use pre-operational checklists before a job
