SKYJACK EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN: HOW DOES IT WORK?

Skyjack Emergency Shutdown

The Skyjack emergency shutdown button is an essential piece of safety equipment. The emergency stop button, also called a kill switch or E-stop switch, works by immediately shutting off the machine to avoid injury in an emergency. The button is used when the equipment can't be turned off under the normal method or when doing so would take too long. The emergency stop or E-stop switch works by breaking a circuit that supplies power to the unit and instantly shutting the machine off.

Skyjack emergency shutdown switches are typically buttons within immediate reach of the operator. Emergency stop buttons in heavy-duty equipment are typically red for quick recognition and have a mushroom head for easy use with one hand. Most units will have two E-stops: one on the platform for the operator and one at the unit's base.

Skyjack Emergency Stop Switch

The Skyjack emergency stop switch or emergency stop button is a fail-safe control used to avert harm in an emergency. An operator typically must rotate, pull, or use a key to release the emergency stop switch and return power to the unit after the button has been pressed. The emergency stop switch should only be reset after any reason for pushing the button in the first place has passed, and work is ready to resume safely.

Skyjack Emergency Lowering Procedure

The easiest and quickest Skyjack emergency lowering procedure is first to ensure the platform has a clear path of descent and nothing is in its way. Once you've confirmed a clear path, you can reset the emergency stop button and lower the unit. Do so by locating the manual descent switch on the side of the unit, then slide and hold the switch until the unit is fully lowered.

If the manual lower switch can't be accessed because the unit is parked against something on that side, a second switch by the emergency stop button at the unit's base can be used with a key.

What Does the Emergency Shutoff Switch Do?

A safety-minded operator will naturally ask, "What does the emergency shutoff switch do?" The emergency shutoff switch – or E-kill switch – immediately stops power to the unit in the case of an emergency. The equipment will immediately stop if the unit's operator presses the red, mushroom-shaped button that breaks a circuit connector.

When troubleshooting why a scissor lift won't raise or drive, be sure the emergency shutoff switch is reset. If your lift is not lifting or you're having issues on the job site, contact our heavy equipment dealer to learn about our on-site service and repair options for construction equipment.

Scissor Lift Shutdown Procedure

Pushing the emergency shutdown button is not only pressed in the event of an emergency; it is also part of the scissor lift shutdown procedure. When you are ready to shut down your scissor lift, the first step is to lower the platform completely.

Once the platform is safely down, turn the key switch to the "OFF" position and remove the key, then push the emergency shutdown button in the lift. Once out of the lift, turn off the main power disconnect switch on the unit and push the emergency shutdown button on the base console if the unit is equipped with a second emergency stop button.
