What is a Light Tower?

Working through the night is no joke. Facing exhaustion, the reversed cycles of the body and depleted vitamin D intake from not seeing enough sun on long stints is bad enough. Not being able to see makes a dangerous condition for almost any kind of work – it’s the last thing your people need. Light towers are a fantastic solution for illuminating dark or nighttime work and are commonly found on industrial or rural jobsites that are able to run shifts around the clock. Did you know that light towers have other uses on the job site, making them one of the most valuable pieces of equipment you can have on-site to show your people the light and give them the power to get the job done? Let’s take a closer look at some of the features that make light towers surprisingly more versatile than most people would expect. It all starts with a question that you have already likely been asking? How do they get their power? A light tower is a little bit more than just a light tower. It is also a power generator. These very efficient generators run on fuel, and before you walk away thinking you don’t want to pay that much for gas to power a light you may only use a few hours a workday, consider this.

Lightbulbs have come a long way.

Yes, you read that right. Lightbulbs have come a very long way technologically speaking – as a matter of fact, it isn’t even accurate to call them lightbulbs in the more modern light tower units. That’s because they use Light Emitting Diodes which you likely know are more commonly known as LEDs. These high-powered LEDs are important to take note of for a couple of reasons. 1) They are much brighter than incandescent or halogen bulbs. Yes, even outside, they are much brighter and come in a few different light colors that can be easier on the eyes than older options. 2) They are more durable. You will commonly find these light towers being craned around job sites and one of the most common mishaps that would take place is having a crane hook swing into a lightbulb. Nobody looks good when that happens. LED packs are much more durable, and while you shouldn’t go throwing crane hooks at them, they will take a glancing blow significantly better than their incandescent predecessors. 3) They are far more energy-efficient. This brings us back to the power issue. These highly efficient light sources don’t use all that much energy, and the generators come with outlets meaning these aren’t just lights, but power sources that will support your crews working all night and the ones who need a plug through the day as well. The newer models of light towers are much smaller and easier to move around the site. They can be loaded onto a forklift, zoom boom, or crane and rolled by hand, depending on the size you want.
